For those of us in the Washington area, there is arguably no place more beautiful but still accessible as West Virginia, particularly the area around Davis, WV. Within just a few miles of downtown Davis are three amazing state parks and one federal wilderness area. Just a little further away is Spruce Knob-Seneca Rocks National Recreation Area.
Because the weather is more like Canada than the mid-Atlantic states, the trees start turning colors early in this part of West Virginia. While there is no guarantee, we should be in for a very colorful weekend at some of the prime locations on the east cost for landscape photography.
Your instructors, Brian Zwit and Elliot Stern, will take you to the falls in Blackwater Falls State Park, the Blackwater River in Canaan Valley Resort State Park, sunrise at the Dolly Sods Wilderness Area (NOT to be missed on a good morning, particularly in the fall), the ancient hemlock forest at Cathedral State Park, and many other locations.
During tour field trips, your instructors will emphasize some tried and true techniques and some more modern trends in landscape photography. We will discuss how to properly use wide angle lens, filters, and plastic lens, convert images to black and white, and when you might want to use software filters. We will also spend some time focusing on the basics of landscape photography, including how to use graduated neutral density filters to even out the exposure of the sky and foreground.
If you are a landscape photographer, West Virginia will provide you with some of the best shooting anywhere on the east coast.
IMPORTANT INFORMATION: Blue Ridge Workshops has negotiated a special room rate with the Blackwater Lodge in Blackwater Falls State Park, which will serve as the host hotel for the weekend and where we will hold the lectures and critiques during the weekend, for the workshop of $104.84 per night plus taxes for a single room and $110.88 for a double room. You need to make your own reservations with the lodge. To get this special rate, please tell the hotel that you are with Blue Ridge Workshops when you call to make a reservation. You can make reservations directly with the hotel by calling (304) 259-5216. We STRONGLY recommend that you make reservations as soon as you register for the workshop. Rooms will be scare in Davis and the surrounding area the weekend of the workshop as it is a long weekend with Columbus Day on Monday and, historically, the peak weekend for fall colors.
