“Digital Photography and Creative Printmaking”

Photography has long left the realm of point and shoot. Images can be digitally manipulated, printed on a bevy of artist papers, hand-colored and altered in ways that allow creative expression of both imagery and mood.

Knowing how to “interpret” a photographic image is part of the fine art process. It is here where the boundaries of traditional and digital art mix and blend.

This three-day workshop is designed to teach creative vision, and creative printmaking.

Day One:  Creative Vision
Theresa and Barbara will kick off the workshop with a Power Point talk on composition that demonstrates how to take and make great photographs.

They will also demonstrate infrared capture with a digital camera showing many examples of what makes a good infrared shot and giving tips on how to “pre-visualize” the makings of an appropriate IR image.

We will then take a field trip and photograph either in IR or color…. or both. (If you do not own a digital camera, we have three or four converted IR cameras to share.)  Barbara and Theresa will serve as field coaches instructing everyone technically and/or aesthetically.

Later, we will download the images captured and select a few for the printmaking session on Saturday.

Day Two: Creative Printmaking

Theresa and Barbara will give an instructive Power Point lecture on creative imaging. They will demonstrate the creative capabilities of20Photoshop as well as third-party softwares such as; *Nik’s Color Efex Pro, Silver Efex Pro, Auto FX Tint and Tone and PGE 7 Edges plus Akvis’ Sketch and ArtWork.  Plenty of time will be given for students to try out some of the techniques on their own work with help from Barbara and Theresa.

*Note: All softwares taught and demo-ed can be downloaded in their trial versions from the internet and Theresa has discount=2 0codes for students who may wish to purchase the programs after trying them out.

Barbara will do a demo/talk on paper selections as a means to enhance imagery. Then, she and Theresa will assist students in selecting papers upon which to print their images.

After printing on artist papers, students will select one image to print out on canvas and attach to a 9x12 cradleboard. The rest of the afternoon will be spent collag-ing and painting upon the cradleboards to create unique pieces of art.

Day Three: Creative Fine Art

Theresa will give a Power Point on increasing creativity and Barbara will give an instructional demo session on creating book art.

The remainder of the day, will be spent painting and hand-coloring our images on canvas, inkjet or exotic papers.

Note: All aforementioned subjects will be covered, but not necessarily in the order listed. Topics may be shuffled according to the participants level of knowledge and/or to the unpredictability of the weather.

After a photographic field trip to demonstrate the art of composition and IR capture, attendees will print their images on various mediums such as canvas and exotic Asian papers in order to learn how appropriate paper selections can further enhance their work.
