Macro / Close-up photography & macro and closeup scenic photography are some of the most creative and educational and rewarding forms of photography in expressing the world around us.

So many photographers believe that this type of art form is to simply make small things BIGGER on the frame.  It’s our goal to dispel this myth.

Macro photography brings all of the elements into place.  It does not matter what the subject might be.  What matters is how you compose, expose, and utilize depth of field applications to express how you dimensionally perceive this image.

We are here to teach you how to combine all of the above elements so that you create outstanding photographic images. You will learn how to work with your particular camera gear, natural, as well as, portable artificial lighting, and light tents, where applicable.

You will have the opportunity to get VERY CLOSE to nature and the miraculous world that nature provides for photographic opportunity and creativity. But we shall also be taking you to very special locations that will offer you some incredible subject matter.

What are you going to be learning?

How to use your existing equipment.
How to choose your subjects
How to compose your subject
How to expose your subject
Proper use of depth of field to control the look, foreground and background
Use of close up lenses and extension tubes that work along with your existing lenses
Use of available light
Use of portable lighting
Use of portable, easy to carry, light tents that help to control your personal space and environment
Use of light modifiers, reflectors and diffusers to control the light around you
and proper use of tripods and ball heads as well as macro rails.  This type of gear will provide the best image stabilization you can find.

Image from the Druid Park ConservatoryWith the victory of digital imaging over film, many photographers thought that the era of black and white photography had come to an end. It was simply impossible to create true, neutral black and white images with the equipment available at that time. However, black and white photography is currently undergoing a renaissance as a result of improvements in software and printers. We can now create black and white images that rival silver halide images.

In Black and White Photography: It’s All About Tones, you will learn how to take and create stunning black and white digital images. You will learn and practice how to choose an appropriate subject, compose your image, calculate exposure, and convert your color digital images to black and white. The workshop includes classroom instruction, field work in downtown Baltimore and the surrounding area, and practice in the digital darkroom.
