Bio

Bob Harper served our nation as a career Army officer, retiring in 1995 and relocating to Hampton VA, to work in the Defense industry. Originally from Mississippi, he developed at an early age an appreciation for and love of nature that is evident in his fine art images of his adopted Hampton Roads area. He graduated from West Point, serving in Vietnam as an infantry platoon leader and company commander. He served in Infantry, Ranger, and Airborne units throughout his career, commanding an infantry battalion in the Republic of Korea and an airborne brigade in the 82d Airborne Division.

Throughout his career in the military, he was an avid amateur photographer, honing his skills wherever he found himself stationed. Upon retirement to the beautiful Tidewater area, his interest in and love of photography continued to grow. Through self-study, experience, and educational opportunities, Bob continued to develop his skills. Today, he is widely regarded as one of the best photographers in our area.

Very active in the community, Bob is a member of St. John’s Episcopal Church, Hampton, where he serves frequently on the Vestry, including several terms as Senior Warden, a delegate to Council, and a Lay Eucharistic Minister. He is a member and past president of The Rotary Club of Hampton and is a member of the Paul Harris Society, the Bequest Society, Committee Chair for Disaster Relief, and a past Assistant District Governor. Bob is member of the Board of Directors of the Arc, an organization dedicated towards improving the lives of mentally challenged adults in the Tidewater area. He also serves as the Board Chair for Hampton Roads Ecumenical Lodging and Provisions (H.E.L.P.), an organization that addresses the needs of the homeless. Additional organizations in which Bob has an interest and supports by Board membership include the Downtown Hampton Child Development Center and the Hampton Family YMCA.

Bob is an active runner and enjoys kayaking the many waterways of our region. Other interests are reading and continuous study of his craft. He is the proud papa of Mosby and Gabe, two Labs from the same litter. Together, they comprise the Harper Pack.

In his photography sessions he strives to capture your special moment to create a long lasting memory. In his fine art photography, Bob strives to capture the beauty of the Hampton Roads Region.

As a photographer, Bob contributes his talent and time to organizations and activities he finds beneficial to the community and will often capture images for use in promotion and fund-raising activities for non-profit organizations and other community services at a nominal fee or no cost at all.
