Tim Farmer
Personal Information
- Bio
Tim Farmer was born with ink in his blood, since both his parents were journalists early in their careers and his mom was one of the first female photographers for a then-new network of newspapers called The Associated Press. He started his first newspaper in sixth grade, a 2-page flyer full of school gossip and bad jokes that he sold for 2 cents per copy. Tim used the proceeds to buy a pet skunk.
Tim graduated from Western Kentucky University in 1983 with a photojournalism degree, and worked as a writer, photographer, and editor for newspapers in Kentucky and Virginia over a span of 15 years. He was involved in the production of compelling, award-winning stories, and was also sued for libel and chased by a one-armed man wielding a rake. As humorist Dave Barry puts it, he isn't making this up. He also spent 10 years as a contributing editor to Canoe & Kayak magazine.

When the State Arboretum of Virginia needed a Public Relations Coordinator, Tim saw the opportunity to combine his love of the outdoors with his writing, editing, and photography experience. He has been at it full time since 1997, but still finds time for adventures and a few freelance assignments from time to time. Tim's work has earned recognition from the National Press Photographers Association, Suburban Newspapers of America, Virginia Press Association, Virginia News Photographers Association, Kentucky Press Association, Western Kentucky University (his alma mater) and others.
Tim's work has appeared in four books, as well as CD covers, posters, calendars, and more. His photography and writing have been published in The Courier Journal (Louisville, KY), The Crittenden Press (Marion, KY), The Daily News (Bowling Green, KY), The Washington Post, Backpacker, Blue Ridge Country, The Beginner's Guide to Canoeing and Kayaking, Canoe & Kayak, Canoe Journal, Elan, Groundwork, Loudoun, Richmond, University of Virginia magazine, Virginia Living, Virginia Explorer, Washington Gardener, and others.
