I have lived in Virginia for over twenty years.
That is not a short period of time, and still I find myself constantly discovering new adventures that people I meet briefly and friends I have known for a long time take me to wonderful places where I find incredible photo ops.
One of those wonderful places is The Burwell-Morgan Grist Mill. There are virtually unlimited creative opportunities to photograph our history in operation.
I found the lighting to be outstanding for photographing the beautiful textures of the old building as well as the giant Mill Wheel and all the parts of the mill synchronizing together to create the different kinds of flower.
At this location you will learn how to deal with available light, fill flash and interpretation of tones and colors and how they can be made to create the depth to make your images outstanding.
You will be photographing not only the mill and the operation of the mill but the history surrounding the mill. You will be dealing with landscape, macro, close-up and architectural situations and learn how to deal with all of them.
The mill is the oldest operating grist mill in the Shenandoah Valley. This beautifully restored mill operated on water power through the 1940s, and then was motorized to continue providing flour and cornmeal until the 1960s. A complete restoration in the 1970s preserved this mill for generations to come and it stands today as a remarkable engineering feat.
